The right diagnosis for knee pain, the right treatment

The knee carries the body's weight and is one of the most heavily used joints during the day. Pain when going down stairs, morning stiffness, swelling or a locking sensation can be signs of many different problems, from osteoarthritis to a meniscus tear. Prof. Dr. Hasan Göçer first identifies the source of knee pain with an examination and imaging, then plans the treatment that suits the patient's age, activity level and expectations.

Non-surgical treatments

In early and moderate knee osteoarthritis, most patients find relief without surgery. An exercise program, weight control, medication and joint injections are the first step. For suitable patients, PRP, stem cell (CGF) therapy and liquid knee prosthesis (hydrogel) are also among the options. The aim is to reduce pain and delay the need for a knee replacement for as long as possible.

Joint-preserving surgery

Meniscus tears and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures seen in sports injuries can be treated arthroscopically through small incisions. In younger patients with a misaligned leg and osteoarthritis limited to one part of the knee, high tibial osteotomy (HTO) corrects the alignment and helps preserve the joint.

Knee replacement surgery

In advanced osteoarthritis, a knee replacement is considered when pain persists despite non-surgical treatment and limits daily life. If the damage is limited to one part of the knee, a partial (unicondylar) replacement is used; for widespread damage, a total knee replacement. In suitable patients with both knees affected, bilateral knee replacement can be planned in one session or in stages. If a previously implanted prosthesis loosens, becomes infected or wears out, the joint is renewed with revision knee replacement.

The treatment process

At the consultation, your symptoms are discussed, the knee is examined and an X-ray or MRI is requested if needed. The treatment plan is decided together with you; if surgery is needed, the preparation beforehand and the physiotherapy afterwards are explained in detail. You can find detailed information on each treatment in the headings on this page and book an appointment for an evaluation.
